📜 Sthala Puranam: The Lord of Life and The Birth of Kumudhavalli
The Elder Brother (Annan Perumal)
• Tirupati Connection: The Moolavar, Annan Perumal (Srinivasan), and His consort, Alarmel Mangai Nachiyar (Padmavathy), share the exact same names as the deities in Tirumala Tirupati.
• The Significance: Due to this fraternal connection, devotees unable to visit Tirupati can visit Thiruvellakulam and worship Annan Perumal to receive the same blessings. Unlike Tirumala, devotees here can receive darshan of both the Moolavar and Thayar Alarmel Mangai Nachiyar side-by-side.
Swedha Pushkarini: Conquering Death
• Swedhan’s Quest: King Dhundhumaran had a son named Swedhan, who was cursed by Sage Vashishtar to die at the age of nine.
• The Remedy: Vashishtar advised Swedhan to bathe in the temple’s Pushkarini and chant the Narasimha Mruthyanjaya Mandhram for one month (from Aypasi Suklabaksha Dashami to Karthigai Ekadhasi Thidhi) beneath the Vilva tree.
• The Blessing: Swedhan followed the instructions, and the Almighty granted him Prathyaksham and conquered his death. Hence, the temple tank is named Swedha Pushkarini. The Lord also gave Prathyaksham to King Itchuvaagu.
The Birthplace of Kumudhavalli
• Kumudhavalli’s Birth: This shrine is the birthplace of Kumudhavalli Nachiyar, who was born here as a female child to a Vaishnava doctor. She was, in reality, the Apsaras Sumangali, who was cursed by Kapila Muni.
• The Condition for Alvar: Kumudhavalli was pivotal in turning the warrior Neelan (later Thirumangai Alvar) into an ardent devotee of Sriman Narayanan, conditioning her marriage on his continuous service, including feeding 1008 Vaishnavites daily at Mangaimadam.
