Thiru Vekka – Sri Yathothakaari Perumal Temple: The Lord Who Obeyed

HOME | Thiru Vekka – Sri Yathothakaari Perumal Temple: The Lord Who Obeyed

Sthalapuranam (The Twin Legends of Devotion and Protection)
The temple’s fame rests on two key narratives:

  1. The Obedience to Thirumizhisai Alwar (Yathothakaari)
    • The Conflict: Thirumizhisai Alwar, a great saint, transformed his elderly house cleaner into a beautiful young woman, whom the King married. When the King demanded that the Alwar sing his praises, the Alwar and his disciple, Kani Kannan, staunchly refused to glorify a human over Srivaikundanathan (Lord Vishnu).
    • Exile and Command: The King angrily exiled Kani Kannan. Loyal to his disciple, the Alwar decided to leave Kanchipuram too. Before departing, the Alwar famously sang a Paasuram commanding the reclining Perumal (Yathothakaari) to roll up His Aadhiseshan bed and quit Kanchipuram along with them.
    • The Miracle: Sriman Narayanan immediately obeyed, leaving the city empty of its divine presence.
    • The Return: Begged by the distressed King and people, Kani Kannan and the Alwar returned. The Alwar then sang another Paasuram, commanding the Perumal to return and sleep once more in His temple. The Lord instantly complied, earning the names Yathothakaari and Sonna Vannam Seitha Perumal.
  2. Protection from the River Vegavathi (Vegasethu)
    • Saraswathi’s Anger: During Lord Brahma’s Ashwametha Yagam, Goddess Saraswathi, angry at Brahma, materialized as the raging Vegavathi river to flood and destroy the sacrifice.
    • The Protective Bridge: To protect the Yagam, Sriman Narayanan lay down across the river on his serpent bed, Aadhiseshan, effectively stopping the flood.
