The temple’s history narrates the famous Vamana Avatara (dwarf incarnation) episode from Hindu scriptures:
• Mahabali’s Ego: Mahabali Chakravarthy, grandson of the great devotee Prahaladhan, performed a large Yagam to usurp Devendra Lokam (Heaven) from Indra. To teach him humility and confirm divine ownership of the cosmos, Sriman Narayanan descended as the dwarf Vamana.
• Three Steps of Land: Vamana asked Mahabali for a mere three feet of land.5 Upon receiving the promise, Vamana grew into the immense form of Trivikrama (Ulagalantha Perumal), his head touching the sky.
• Cosmic Measurement: With his First Step, he measured the Earth and the Sky; with the Second Step, he covered Heaven and beyond.
• Mahabali’s Surrender: When Trivikrama demanded the Third Step, Mahabali surrendered his own head.6 The Lord pressed his foot onto Mahabali’s head, granting him salvation.
• Aadhiseshan’s Darshan: Since Mahabali couldn’t fully witness the Trivikrama form when his head was being pressed, he prayed to see the Lord’s cosmic scale. As a concession, the Perumal is seen giving seva as Aadhiseshan (Ooragathaan) right next to the Ulagalantha Perumal idol. The term Ooragam refers to the serpent.
