📜 Sthala Puranam: The Lord Who Rules and Measures
The Divine Accountant (Aandu Alakkum Ayyan)
The unique posture and accessories of the Moolavar are central to the Sthala Puranam:
• The Lord reclines (Kidantha Kolam), but instead of resting His head on His hand, He uses a Marakkaal (a traditional measuring tool) as a pillow.
• His left hand holds an Ezhuthaani (writing instrument) and a Palm Leaf Scroll (Olai Chuvadi).
This depiction signifies His role as the “Aandu Alakkum Ayyan” (The Lord Who Rules and Measures):
• He calculates and records the good and bad activities (Karma) of every Jeevaathmaa (soul).
• The Marakkaal symbolizes the measuring tool used for dispensing the appropriate results of karma—good or bad—to the living beings.
• His right hand is in the Padi Alakkum Kai posture, signifying the hand that serves and provides all necessary things for the world (mankind, animals, rivers, etc.).
Aadhavanulla Oor and Kamadhenu
• Aadhavanulla Oor: The Lord is the Paramaathma (Supreme Soul) who resides within all hearts and sees all actions. The Sun (Aadhavan) is considered His divine eye, and nothing escapes His sight. The name Aadhavanulla Oor (Place where the Sun/Lord resides) evolved into Adhanoor. The holy tank is thus named Surya Pushkarani.
• Kamadhenu’s Blessing: The name “Adhanoor” also relates to the divine cow Kamadhenu. The word “Aa” (cow) combined with than oor (place given) means “Aa-than-oor” (The place given to the Cow). Kamadhenu, which emerged during the Kurma Avatar (Tortoise Incarnation), performed penance here and received the Lord’s Prathyaksham (divine viewing).
Thirumangai Alvar’s Special Place
Thiru Adhanoor is the only Divya Desam where the body (Thirumeni) of Thirumangai Alvar resides inside the Garbhagriham (Moolavar’s sanctum), a unique honor reflecting the Lord’s special grace upon the Alvar.
