🙏 Sthalapuranam (The Legend of the Thief and the Three Postures)
The temple’s lore centers on the playful interaction between Sriman Narayanan and Goddess Parvathi (Kamakshi):
• Parvathi’s Penance: The story begins with Lord Shiva asking Goddess Parvathi (after a quarrel) to perform Tapas by standing on one leg, which she successfully completed.
• The Divine Peeking: Later, while Goddess Kamakshi and Sri Lakshmi were bathing in the Kama Koshtam (a sacred pool), Emperumaan (Lord Vishnu) playfully hid behind a pillar to watch them and eavesdrop on their conversation.
• The Punishment: Kamakshi discovered the Lord watching them secretly. To punish Him for this “theft” of a glance, she made him assume three different postures in quick succession: Standing (Nindra), Sitting (Irundha), and Reclining (Kidantha) poses.
• The Name “Kalvan”: Because Sriman Narayanan was “caught” watching, Parvathi named Him “Kalvan” (Thief), and the Divyadesam became known as Thirukkalvanoor.
• Triple Seva Site: As a result of this incident, the Lord is seen in all three sevas (Standing, Sitting, and Reclining) on the North side of the temple pond in the complex.
