📜 Sthala Puranam: Rama’s Divine Duty and Repose
The Funeral of Jatayu (Pullam Kudi)
• The Incident: After the valiant eagle Jatayu (belonging to the Pull or bird family) was mortally wounded while trying to prevent Sita’s abduction, Lord Rama performed the final funeral rites (Anthima Samskaram) for him, treating Jatayu as His own father, King Dasaratha.
• The Repose: After completing this exhausting, sorrowful, yet sacred duty, Lord Rama took rest (Bhootam Kudi) here. The name Pullam Bootha Kudi signifies the place where the Pull (bird) received the rites and the Lord took repose (Kudi meaning place of staying/dwelling).
The Unique Kidantha Kolam
The posture of the Moolavar is unique and highly symbolic:
• Valvil Raman (Rama, the one with the strong bow) is seen in Kidantha Kolam (Reclining Posture) on the Bhujanga Sayanam (serpent bed).
• Sita’s Absence: Lord Rama, having lost Sita, is still holding His Kothandam (Bow), which serves as His only support and companion in her absence.
• Bhoomi Devi’s Support: To comfort and support Lord Rama in His sorrow and fatigue, Bhoomi Pirattiyar (Goddess Earth) is uniquely present, sitting alongside Valvil Ramar, symbolizing Mother Earth’s compassion.
Revelation of Lord Narayana
This site is where the human incarnation of the Lord, Sri Rama, reveals His true divine form:
• To Kruthra Rajan: When Kruthra Rajan (a king who received the same divine vision as Jatayu) performed severe penance, Lord Rama appeared before him in His Moola Avathaar (Original Form) as Sriman Narayanan.
• Chathur Bhujan Darshan: The Lord is uniquely seen here as Chakaravarthy (Emperor) along with four hands (Chathur Bhujan) holding the Sangu (Conch) and Chakram (Disc), signifying that Rama and Narayana are one and the same ultimate reality.
Moral Significance: Rama’s act of performing the funeral for Jatayu, whom he addressed as “father,” emphasizes the primacy of parents and ancestors and that service (karma) must be performed, regardless of one’s own grief or status.
