🛌 Unique Darshan of the Reclining Lord
The Moolavar, Sri Kaasina Vendhan, is enshrined in a majestic reclining posture, but the worship offers a distinctive visual experience:
• Partial Darshan: Devotees performing direct worship in the main sanctum can see only one foot of the Almighty.
• Complete Darshan: The full image of Bhoomipaalan (including both feet) can be viewed from a side window opening while circumambulating the temple—a rare architectural provision.
🌎 The Legend of Bhoomipaalan
The Moolavar earned the name Bhoomipaalan (The Protector of the Earth) due to a legend concerning the Goddess Bhoomi Devi:
• The Dispute: Bhoodevi Nachiyar became upset, feeling that the Lord favored Sridevi Nachiyar and was neglecting her. In anger, she hid herself away in Paadhalalogam (the netherworld).
• The Consequences: Her absence caused widespread drought and darkness across the Earth.
• The Resolution: Lord Vishnu appeared and lovingly reasoned with Bhoodevi, assuring her that she was equally dear to Him as Sridevi. He then brought her back from the netherworld and gave darshan to all here at Thiruppulingudi.
💫 Other Uniqueness and Significance
• Adiseshan and Brahma: A unique artistic feature is the idol group of Adiseshan (the serpent bed) and Lord Brahma, which are sculpted from a single stone.
• Gigantic Nachiyars: The consorts, Malarmangai Nachiyar and Bhoodevi Nachiyar, bless devotees in notably gigantic postures here.
• No Sataari Offering: Unlike most Divyadesams, there is no tradition of offering Sataari (the crown representing the Lord’s feet) to the devotees here.
• Ramanuja’s Reverence: When Ramanuja was traveling to Thirukurugoor (Nammalwar’s birthplace), he passed through this area. A young girl, a devotee of Nammalwar, recited his pasurams to Ramanuja and provided directions. Impressed by her deep devotion and spiritual knowledge, Ramanuja bowed at her feet, believing the Almighty Himself had appeared to guide him.
