🗿 Two Divine Postures in the Rock-Cut Cave
Thirumayam is one of the few Divyadesams where the Almighty can be worshipped in two distinct forms within the same rock-cut cave temple, built by Narasimha Pallavan:

  1. Standing Posture: Sathyagirinathan blesses devotees in a standing form, facing South, with Goddess Mahalakshmi gracing His chest.
  2. Reclining Posture: The Lord is housed in a colossal, rock-cut Sayana Posture (reclining) measuring nearly 30 feet. This immense size leads to the temple being hailed as Adi Rangam, predating or surpassing the scale of the famous Srirangam Ranganatha Swamy.
🛡️ The Unique Protection of Adiseshan
A remarkable and unique feature of Thirumayam is the depiction of the serpent Adiseshan actively protecting the Lord:
    • Legend: It is believed that when Asuras (demons) attempted to steal the Lord, Adiseshan defended the temple by releasing poisonous air.
    • Iconography: This unique event is depicted here, showing Adiseshan letting out poisonous air, signifying his role as the eternal protector of the shrine.
🌙 The Pancha Sathya Kshetram Legend
The region earned the title Pancha Sathya Kshetram (Five Truths) because five key elements associated with the temple carry the name Sathya (Truth):
  3. Sathyagirinathan (The Lord’s Name)
  4. Sathyagiri Vimanam (The Temple Tower)
  5. Sathya Theertham (The Holy Water)
  6. Sathya Vanam (The Sacred Forest/Tree)
  7. Sathya Kshetram (The Region/Land)
This holy land was the site of penance for Chandra Bhagwan (The Moon God).
    • Trimurthi Test: Chandra was one of the three sons born to Anusuya (wife of Athiri Muni), after she miraculously transformed the Trimurthis (Brahma, Vishnu, Shiva) into infants to serve them food modestly.
    • The Boon: Chandra performed intense Tapas (penance) towards Sriman Narayanan here. Pleased, the Almighty granted Chandra’s wish: that just as the Lord resides in Surya Mandalam, He should also reside in Chandra Mandalam.
    • Result: The Moolavar is worshipped as Sathya Moorthy, and the Vimanam is named Sathyagiri Vimanam and Soma Sundhara Vimanam (Soma referring to the Moon God, Chandra).
