📜 Sthala Puranam: Trivikrama’s Pose and Unconditional Grace
The Trivikrama Posture
• World Measurement: The Moolavar is seen in the magnificent Ulagalantha Sevai (measuring the world), a Standing Posture where His Left Leg is lifted high above His head.
• Weaponry: Unlike some other Trivikrama shrines, the Lord here is seen with all five of His weapons. His left hand is also extended toward His lifted left foot.
• The Four Trivikrama Shrines: This temple is one of the four Divya Desams where the Lord appears as Trivikrama:

  1. Thirukazheeseerama Vinnagaram: Left Leg Raised.
  2. Thiru Ooragam: Left Leg Raised.
  3. Thiruneermalai: Left Leg Raised.
  4. Thirukovilur: Right Leg Raised.
Romasha Muni’s Boon and Brahma’s Age
    • The Curse: Romasha Muni, whose body was covered in hair, was once insulted by Lord Brahma, who likened the Rishi’s hairs to Brahma’s lifespan.
    • The Blessing: The Rishi performed penance here, and the Lord blessed him: every time the Rishi lost a hair, Lord Brahma would lose one year of his age. Overjoyed, Romasha Muni was blessed with the Trivikrama Posture.
Thavittu Panai Thadalan (The Lord of the Bran Pot)
    • The Utsavar’s Name: The Utsavar, Thadlalan (The Ruler by His Foot), is famously known as Thavittu Panai Thadalan.
    • The Legend: When the temple was in disrepair, an old woman lovingly hid the idol in a pot of rice husk/bran (Thavittu Panai) and worshipped it daily. Instructed by the Lord in a dream, she later handed the idol to Thirumangai Alvar.
    • The Nawab Incident: The Utsavar was once taken by the Nawabs and given as a toy to a princess. A devotee, Chidambaram Padayachi, requested the Utsavar to return, and the deity miraculously obeyed, underscoring the Lord’s accessibility to true devotees.
    Shaiva-Vaishnava Harmony
    • The Debate: The temple is famous for the meeting between Thirumangai Alvar and the great Shaivite Saint Thirugnana Sambandar.
    • The Alvar’s Victory: After a debate, the Alvar sang the beautiful Pasuram “Oru Kuralai Iru Nila Moovadi Mann….” on the Trivikrama form. Deeply moved, Sambandar acknowledged the Alvar’s victory, praised him as Nalkavi Perumal (Master of four kinds of poetry), and gifted him a Vel (spear) and Thandai (anklets), symbolizing the harmony between the two faiths
