📜 Sthala Puranam: The Sword, The Ganga, and The Dagger
The Legend of Parthan Palli
• Arjuna’s Thirst: Arjuna (Parthan) was overcome by intense thirst here while traveling. He approached Sage Agasthiyar, who was performing penance. When the sage offered water from his Kamandalam, the water vanished as soon as it touched Arjuna’s hand.
• Krishna’s Intervention: Sage Agasthiyar revealed that this was the Lord’s leela (divine play), prompting Arjuna to pray to Lord Krishna.
• The Ganga’s Descent (Kadga Theertham): Lord Krishna appeared and gave Arjuna a sword (Kadga), instructing him to strike the earth. When Arjuna obeyed, Mother Ganga Herself sprang forth to quench his thirst.
• The Name: Since Parthan (Arjuna) received the Lord’s grace here, the place is called Thiruparthanpalli (Arjuna’s resting place). The resulting tank is named Ganga Theertham and Kadga Theertham.
• The Dagger Symbol: To commemorate this incident, the Moolavar, Sri Thamaraiyal Kelvan, is uniquely seen with a dagger in His belt.
The Lord of the Lotus (Thamaraiyal Kelvan)
• Moolavar’s Name: Thamaraiyal Kelvan means “The Husband of the Goddess of the Lotus” (Goddess Lakshmi).
• The Unique Darshan: This is the only Divya Desam in the world where both the Moolavar and the Utsavar bless devotees along with all three of their consorts: Sridevi, Bhoodevi, and Neeladevi (Neeladevi is sometimes seen as Satyabhama/Rukmini).
Other Prathyakshams
• Varuna’s Absolution: Lord Varuna (Rain God) received Prathyaksham here and was relieved of the Brahma Hathi Dhosam he incurred.
• Agasthiyar’s Blessings: Prathyaksham was also granted to sages like Agasthiyar, Gautama Muni, and Bharadwaja Maharishi.
