📜 Sthala Puranam: The Lord of the Elephant and the Monkey
This Sthalam is unique because the Lord grants moksham (liberation) and darshan (sacred viewing) in a reclining posture (Kidantha Kolam on Bhujanga Sayanam) to two extraordinary devotees:

  1. Gajendran (The Elephant Devotee):
  2. Lord Anjaneya (Hanuman, the Monkey God): Also called “Siriya Thiruvadi” (the Small Sacred Feet), known for his immortality (Chiranjeevi Pattam) and devotion to Sri Rama.4
    Gajendra Moksham
The most famous event associated with this temple is the salvation of Gajendra.
    • When the devoted elephant, Gajendra, was attempting to pluck a lotus for worship, its leg was seized by a powerful crocodile in the pond.
    • In its final desperate moments, Gajendra raised its trunk toward the sky, crying out to Sriman Narayanan for help.5
    • Hearing the plea, the Lord immediately flew from Thirupparkadal (Ocean of Milk) on Garudan (His divine vehicle) to rescue Gajendra.
    • The Lord liberated Gajendra from the crocodile’s grasp and granted the elephant Moksham (the final, desired destination of every soul).
Core Moral: The story teaches that the Lord provides help and liberation to any living being (Jeevathmaa), regardless of whether it is a small human or a non-human creature, provided they surrender completely to Him.
    The Name ‘Kabisthalam’
    • In several languages, “Kabi” means monkey. Since Lord Narayanan specifically granted seva (service/darshan) to Lord Anjaneyar (the monkey god) here, the place is named Kabisthalam.
    • The Lord also granted Anjaneya seva as his beloved Sri Rama, and Gajendra seva as Sri Vaikundanathan.
    Krishnaranya Shetram
The Lord also displayed His seva as “Kannan” (Lord Krishna) on the riverbanks, leading this sacred place to be called “Krishnaranya Shetram” (The Forest Shrine of Krishna). This temple is considered the Gokulam (holy place) for Anjaneyar and Gajendran, just as
