Thiru Thanjai Maamani Koil: The Divine Triad of Tanjore Divya Desams

HOME | Thiru Thanjai Maamani Koil: The Divine Triad of Tanjore Divya Desams

🌟 The Divine Speciality: A Triplet of Temples
This unique Divya Desam encompasses three distinct temples, all located within a short distance of about one mile from each other:

  1. Thanjai Maamani Koil (The Main Temple – Neelamega Perumal)
  2. Thanjai Manikundra Perumal Koil
  3. Thanjai Yazhinagar Koil
Key Common Feature: In all three temples, the Moolavar (main deity) is in a Sitting Posture, and the Utsavar (processional deity) is uniformly named “Sriman Narayanan.”

Sthala Puranam: The Lord of Protection and Viraja River
The Origin on Vennaaru Bank
The river Vennaaru (formerly Vinnaaru) is central to the temple’s origin. It is believed to be the earthly manifestation of the Viraja River—a sacred river flowing in Vishnulokam (Vaikuntha) with Amudhan (nectar of eternity).
• Parasara Maharishi and other sages performed penance here, desiring to witness Lord Narayana’s presence on earth. The Lord graciously seated Himself on the banks of this pious river, leading to the establishment of the Tanjore Maamani Koils.
The Legend of Thanjakasuran
The history of the Thanjai Yazhinagar Koil is particularly significant for its connection to the demon Thanjagan, one of the three demons (Tharagan, Thandagan, and Thanjagan) who troubled the resident Rishis by destroying their yagnas (sacrifices).
• While Kaalidevi (Goddess Kali, consort of Lord Shiva) killed the other two demons

• In response to the rishis’ fervent prayers, Lord Narayana took the form of Narasimha (his 4th Avatar) to kill Thanjagan.
• Legacy: In remembrance of the demon Thanjakasuran, the place was named Tanjore Nagar (Thanjavur), and the Goddess here is called Thanjai Naayaki.
Significance of Narasimha: The Lord taking the form of Narasimha (4th Avatar) despite the events occurring around the time of the Krishna Avatar highlights the Vedic truth that Lord Narayana will assume any form, at any time, to protect his devotees.
