🙏 Sthalapuranam (The Legend of Divine Cooling)
The temple’s lore is intertwined with the story of Goddess Parvathi’s Tapas (penance) and the interventions of Lord Shiva and Lord Vishnu:
• Shiva’s Test by Fire: When Goddess Parvathi was performing Tapas under a mango tree, Lord Shiva tested her by engulfing the tree in fire.
• Vaamanar’s Intervention: Parvathi sought the help of Sri Vaamanar (Lord Vishnu). Vaamanar, in his four-armed form, took the Chandran (Moon) from Lord Shiva’s head and used its cool rays to extinguish the fire, allowing the mango tree to grow again.
• The Ganga Challenge: Shiva then challenged Parvathi again by sending the forceful Ganga river to flood the area and disrupt her Tapas.
• The Fusion: Despite Parvathi’s pleas that they were sisters, Ganga persisted. To protect the Shiva Lingam she fashioned out of sand, Parvathi hugged the Lingam, leading to the fusion of Shiva and Parvathi (Ardhanarishwar concept).
• Nilathingal Thundathan: The Perumal is named “Nilathingal Thundathan” (or “Chandirra Chuda Perumal”) because Sriman Narayanan took the Moon crescent (thingal thundam) from Shiva’s head to provide cooling relief (Nila – cool) and prevent the destruction of the Lingam by fire and water.
