Sthalapuranam (The Story of the Divine Diplomat)
The temple’s narrative is directly drawn from a pivotal moment in the Mahabharata, as heard by King Janameyjayan:
• The Diplomatic Mission: Lord Krishna traveled to Hasthinapuram to act as a Thoodhuvan (Diplomat), attempting to negotiate peace and prevent the catastrophic war between the Pandavas and Kauravas.
• Duriyodhanan’s Betrayal: Despite the Dharma (righteous code) that mandates respect for a diplomat, the Kaurava chief Duriyodhanan conspired to kill Krishna by digging a large pit under the seating platform and hiding soldiers within it.
• The Vishwaroopa Dharshan: Knowing Duriyodhanan’s plan, Lord Krishna revealed his true nature by granting the magnificent Vishwaroopa Dharshan (Universal Form) to all present, rendering their attempts futile.
• Janameyjayan’s Quest: Inspired by this story, King Janameyjayan performed an Ashwametha Yagam to receive the same vision.
• Pandava Thoodhan Seva: At the conclusion of the Yagam, Sriman Narayanan granted Janameyjayan his wish, appearing in the Vishwaroopa Dharshan as “Pandava Thoodhan.” This magnificent form of the Lord, also referred to in sculpture as “Thootha Hari” (Hari the Messenger), is the presiding deity of the temple.
