🙏 Sthalapuranam (The Legend of Divine Illumination)
The temple’s history is linked to the continuation of Lord Brahma’s pivotal Aswamedha Yaagam in Kanchipuram:
• The Darkness: Goddess Saraswathi, instigated by Asuraas (demons), attempted to halt the Yaagam. To extinguish the vital fire, the Asuraas enveloped the sky, plunging the sacrificial area into pitch-black darkness, a primary obstacle to the ritual.
• The Appearance of Light: At this crucial moment, Sriman Narayanan intervened, manifesting as a brilliant Divine Light. This light dispelled the darkness, restoring the essential illumination needed to complete the Yaagam.
• Deepa Prakasar: The Lord is therefore called Deepa Prakasar (Deepam meaning Light; Prakasam meaning Flash/Spread), or Vilakkoli Perumal (The Lord who gave light).
• Philosophical Significance: The manifestation symbolizes the Lord’s role in removing the darkness of ignorance that surrounds the differentiation between Jeevathma (individual soul) and Paramathama (Supreme Soul), replacing it with the Gnana Oli (Light of Wisdom).
• Goddess Maragathavalli: Periya Pirattiyar (Goddess Lakshmi) is present as Maragathavalli Thaayar, taking the resemblance of Parashakthi, actively assisting the Lord in this act of illumination.
