II. 📜 Sthala Puranam and Significance
- The Origin of the Forest (The Chakra Theertham)
The legend behind Naimisaranyam’s unique spiritual power is tied to its formation:
• The Sages’ Query: The sages approached Lord Brahma and requested a suitable place on earth to perform penance during the Kali Yuga.
• The Chakra (Discus): Brahma released his divine disc, the Sudarshana Chakra, and told the sages to follow it. The spot where the Chakra fell and came to rest, creating a deep depression in the earth, was designated as the sacred forest for penance.
• The Name: The forest is where the nimisha (fraction of a second/the axle hub) of the Chakra fell, giving it the name Naimisaranyam (Aranyam means forest). The depression formed the Chakra Theertham. - The Birthplace of the Puranas
Naimisaranyam is the spiritual center for the dissemination of Hindu scriptures:
• Gathering of Sages: This is the place where a massive assembly of 88,000 sages led by Shaunaka Muni gathered.
• Sutha Purana: Here, Sutha Puranika narrated the vast, ancient narratives known as the Puranas (including the Bhagavatham, Vishnu Purana, etc.) to the assembled Rishis, making it the supreme site for scriptural knowledge. - Praised by the Azhwars
Thiru Naimisaranyam is a celebrated Divya Desam, and its holiness is praised by the Azhwars in the Divya Prabandham, recognizing its status as an eternal sacred site sanctified by the presence of Lord Vishnu and the concentrated devotion of thousands of sages.
