☁️ Kalamegha Perumal: The Cloud of Blessings
• Meaning: The name Kaala Megham translates to “Dark Cloud laden with rain drops.”
• Significance: Just as a rain-bearing cloud provides water when needed, the Almighty here is filled with boons (Varam) and grants them readily to devotees who worship Him, earning Him the title of the Boon Giver.
• Appearance: The Moolavar stands in a posture akin to the Lord in the famous Kancheepuram Varadharaja Perumal Temple, holding His Gadha (mace) in the left hand and extending His right hand for Varadha Hastham.
• Maarga Bandhu: He is also worshipped as Maarga Bandhu (Companion on the Path), as He grants salvation (Moksham) to those who surrender to Him.
🧘 Chakrathalwar and the Unique Prarthana Sayanam
- The Powerful Sudharsana Chakra
The temple is highly renowned for the shrine of Chakrathaalwar (Sudharsana Murthy), the personification of the Lord’s Discus:
• Iconography: He is depicted in a fierce Prathyaleetha Posture (a position ready for action), brandishing 16 different weapons in his 16 arms, constantly prepared to aid his devotees.
• Yoga Narasimhar: The reverse side of the Sudharsana panel features Lord Narasimhar in a calming Yoga Posture, uniquely holding the Conch (Sangu) and Discus (Chakra) in His hands. - The Rare Prarthana Sayanam
Thirumohur houses a separate shrine for Thiruparkadal Nathan (Lord of the Milky Ocean) in a unique and unusual form of repose:
• Prarthana Sayanam: The Lord is seen in the Prarthana Sayanam (Prayerful Reclining) posture, facing South.
• The Consorts: Unlike the typical Bhoga Sayanam, here the consorts Sridevi and Bhoodevi are depicted in a praying posture at the Lord’s feet.
• Origin: This form was granted to Sage Palasthiyar, who performed penance here to witness the Lord churning the Milky Ocean.
• Significance: This is one of the seven major Sayana Postures of the Almighty found in Divyadesams.
📜 Mohini Avatar and the Recovery of the Vedas - The Amrita Distribution (Mohini Avatar)
This Kshetram is the very place where Lord Vishnu manifested as the captivating enchantress Mohini to resolve the conflict over Amudham (Nectar of Immortality):
• After the successful Samudra Manthanam (Churning of the Milky Ocean), the Asuras seized the Amudham.
• To ensure the Devas received the Nectar, Lord Vishnu took the form of the beautiful Mohini.
• The mesmerized Asuras agreed to let Mohini distribute the Amudham, who cleverly ensured it went only to the Devas.
• When the Asura Rahu tried to cheat, Mohini struck him, severing his head and body, resulting in the birth of the celestial entities Rahu and Ketu. - Recovery of the Vedas
• Before the churning, two Asuras, Madhu and Kaidhaban, stole the Vedic scriptures from Lord Brahma.
• Brahma performed daily rituals and prayers here, seeking the Almighty’s intervention.
• Pleased, the Lord defeated the Asuras, recovered the Vedas, and handed them back to Brahma. In gratitude, Brahma requested and received the direct vision (prathyaksham) of the Lord as Kaalamegha Perumal.
