🌿 The Holy Tamarind Tree (Puliyalwar)
The most unique and powerful symbol of Azhwar Thirunagari is the ancient Tamarind Tree inside the temple complex:
• Nammalwar’s Penance: From his childhood, Nammalwar spent 16 years under this tree without consuming food or water, keeping his eyes closed, determined to see only the Almighty.
• Lakshmana’s Service: The Tamarind Tree itself is believed to be Lord Lakshmana (Rama’s brother) in tree form, serving Nammalwar as his place of penance. The tree is revered as “Puliyalwar.”
• The Source of Pasurams: It was by merely sitting under this blessed tree that Nammalwar composed his famous hymns (pasurams) on 35 Divyadesams.
• Worship: The Tamarind Tree receives a daily sacred bath (Thirumanjanam), acknowledging its divine importance.
📜 Guru Kshetram and Brahma’s Penance
• The Title: The place is called Kurugoor (later Azhwar Thirunagari) because Lord Vishnu Himself acted as the Guru (Teacher) to Lord Brahma Devar.
• The Advice: Lord Brahma requested the Almighty to advise him on the best place to perform penance. The Almighty directed him to Thirukurugoor, making this spot a Guru Kshetram (Place of the Teacher).
🙏 Nammalwar: The Source of Wisdom
• Nammalwar’s Birth: Nammalwar was born to Udaya Nangai and was instantly blessed with Gnanam (Divine Knowledge) by the Almighty. Consequently, Nammalwar accepted both his biological mother and the Divine Mother (the Almighty) as his mothers.
• Nava Tirupati Custom: As a result of this unique recognition, in all Nine Temples of the Nava Tirupati Divyadesams, the Moolavar is worshipped with His two Consorts (Nachiyars).
• Kambar’s Homage: The great Tamil poet Kambar (who wrote Kamba Ramayanam) paid his respect to Nammalwar before reciting his epic by composing the “Sadagopar Andadhthi,” bowing his head toward the Azhwar.
🎠Preservation of Araiyar Sevai
Thirukurugoor is one of the three Divyadesams (along with Srirangam and Srivilliputhur) that actively preserves the ancient and artistic tradition of Araiyar Sevai, where the verses of the Divya Prabandham are recited, explained, and enacted through unique musical dance performances during festivals.
⚪ The White Dhoti of Ramanuja
Another notable uniqueness within the temple complex is the shrine dedicated to Udayavar Sri Ramanujar, where he is specially depicted wearing a White Dhoti, which is unusual as he is typically shown wearing the saffron robes of a Sanyasi.
This temple is a profound center of spiritual power, revered as the source of Nammalwar’s boundless devotion and the site where the Lord Himself became a Guru.
