📜 Sthala Puranam: The Lord of the Earring
The unique name of the Moolavar, Makara Nedunguzhai Kaadhar (or Magaranedu Kuzhaikathan), is central to the temple’s legend:
• The Stolen Earring: The temple’s goddess, Kuzhaikkaaduvalli Nachiyar, had an earring (Kuzhai) in the shape of a fish or shark (Makara). Legend says this valuable earring was once stolen by a thief.
• The Lord’s Intervention: The thief, after stealing the ornament, hid in the temple. Lord Vishnu, acting as the Protector of the temple and the Goddess’s honor, appeared and caught the thief.
• The Name: Because the Lord intervened to retrieve the Goddess’s shark-shaped earring, He is affectionately hailed as Makara Nedunguzhai Kaadhar—The Lord who protected the Makara Earring.
☀️ The Double-Sun Phenomenon
Thiru Perai is famed for a peculiar celestial phenomenon involving the sun:
• Two Sun Rays: The rays of the sun uniquely fall upon the Moolavar’s idol twice a year: once in the month of Chithirai (April-May) and again in the month of Aipasi (October-November).
• Significance: This rare occurrence highlights the Sun God’s (Surya’s) continuous reverence for the Lord of Thiru Perai.
🙏 Guru Kshetram and Worshippers
• Jupiter’s Remedial Site: This Divyadesam is dedicated to the planet Guru (Jupiter). Worshipping here is believed to mitigate any negative effects or Dosham caused by the position of Jupiter in a person’s astrological chart.
• Worshipped by Devas: The Lord here was worshipped by many celestial beings, including Lord Brahma, Sage Sukra (Venus), and Sage Narada, leading to the holy tank being named Sukra Pushkarini.
🎶 Nammalwar’s Hymns
This temple also received the highest praise from Nammalwar, who dedicated 11 pasurams to Makara Nedunguzhai Kaadhar, cementing its importance in the Divya Prabandham canon.
Thiru Perai offers a tranquil and powerful experience, especially for those seeking the blessings of Guru and protection from the ill effects of Jupiter.
