💃 The Legend of Mayakoothan (The Victory Dance)
The Utsava Perumal, Mayakoothan (The Wonderful Dancer), received His name following a significant victory:
• Defeat of Asmachaaran: Lord Maha Vishnu, riding on His mount Garuda Vahanam, came to this spot to defeat the powerful demon Asmachaaran.
• The Victory Dance: After successfully defeating the Asura, the Lord is said to have performed a joyful victory dance while standing on the body of the defeated Asura.
• The Devas’ Wish: The Devas, witnessing this magnificent, ‘dancing victory,’ requested the Lord to provide Darshan here in the form of the ‘Maaya’ Koothan (The Wonderful/Illusory Dancer).
👶 The Blessing of Progeny and Union
The temple is strongly associated with blessings for children and divine union:
• Kumudavalli’s Devotion: A childless couple, Vedhacharan and Kumudavalli, performed penance and bathed in the holy river here, leading the Almighty to bless them with a daughter, whom they named Kumudavalli.
• Divine Union: The daughter, Kumudavalli, grew up desiring to marry the Almighty Himself. After relentless prayers and sincerity, the Lord appeared, granted her wish, and accepted her, taking her into His chest.
• The Four Consorts: The Moolavar, Sri Srinivasa Perumal, is uniquely seen here with Sri Devi, Bhoo Devi, and Neela Devi, along with Kamaladevi on His chest, symbolizing complete divine acceptance.
• Progeny Blessings: Due to the events surrounding the birth of Kumudavalli, the temple’s Pushkarini, Perunkulam, is believed to be potent for granting progeny to childless couples.
🐍 The Unique Garuda and Saneeswara Kshetram
• Garudalwar’s Position: A unique feature of this temple is that Periya Thiruvadi Garudalwar (Lord Garuda) is seen positioned alongside the Utsavar (Mayakoothan), highlighting the Lord’s immediate readiness for action, having come on Garuda for the victory dance.
• Saneeswara Pariharam: This shrine is the dedicated Saneeswara Kshetram in the Nava Tirupati group. Devotees suffering from the ill effects of Sani (Saturn) perform special rituals here for alleviation of Saneeswara Dosham.
🎶 Nammalwar’s Praise
Nammalwar praised Mayakoothan in his pasurams, referring to Him as a wonder dancer riding on Garuda in the West of Kulanthai. Nammalwar, desiring to see the Lord’s beauty, visited here and lost himself completely in the vision of the handsome Mayakoothan, confirming the temple’s spiritual power.
Thirukulanthai serves as a crucial temple for those seeking astrological remedy and spiritual fulfillment through the vision of the Lord’s victorious and compassionate form.
