📜 The Essence of Saranagathi (Surrender)
Thirupullani is considered the most sacred among the 108 Divya Desams for those seeking absolute refuge in the Almighty, based on two major events:
- Vibheeshana’s Refuge
• This is the spot where Vibheeshana, the righteous brother of the demon Ravana, arrived seeking asylum and surrendered at the feet of Lord Rama.
• Hanuman’s Plea: When the Vaanara Sena (monkey army) suspected treachery, it was Hanuman who successfully advocated for Vibheeshana’s acceptance.
• Unique Darshan: Hanuman is specially depicted here in a posture signifying his defense of Vibheeshana and his successful request to Rama to accept the refugee. - Samudhra Rajan’s Surrender
• Darbha Sayana: Following the acceptance of Vibheeshana, Rama lay on a bed of sacred Darbha (grass) on the shores of Sethu, fasting for seven days, requesting the Samudhra Rajan (King of the Sea) to provide a path to Lanka.
• The Threat: When the Sea King failed to respond, a furious Rama threatened to dry up the entire ocean. Terrified, Samudhra Rajan and his wife Varuni emerged and fell at Rama’s feet in complete Saranagathi (surrender).
• Temple Name: This posture of lying on the grass (Pull = grass, Anai = bed) led to the name Thirupullani.
🏹 Three Forms of Lord Rama
Apart from the Moolavar, the temple features two other highly significant sanctums dedicated to Lord Rama: - Darbha Sayana Ramar: Worshipped in the Veera Sayana Posture (heroic reclining), lying on the grass with His weapon (sword) by His side, surrounded by His warriors.
- Pattabishga Ramar (Pattabi Ramar): Lord Rama blesses devotees in His Coronation Posture (Pattabishka Thirukkolam) even before His actual coronation in Ayodhya, fulfilling the wishes of His devotees immediately after defeating Ravana.
🤰 The Sanctum of Progeny (Sandhana Gopalan)
• Sandhana Gopala Mandapam: A separate shrine dedicated to Sandhana Gopalan (Lord Krishna as a child on Adishesha), situated north of the Darbha Sayana Ramar sannadhi.
• Belief for Childless Couples: This is an extremely potent shrine for couples seeking children. It is strongly believed that Emperor Dasharatha performed a Yagna (sacrifice) here, after which he was blessed with his four sons (Rama, Lakshmana, Bharata, Shatrughna).
• Ritual: Childless couples who take a holy bath at the Sethu River and worship Adi Jaganatha Perumal and Sandhana Gopalan are traditionally blessed with a child.
🌰 The Squirrel’s Contribution: A Mark of Grace
The temple legend prominently features the story of the squirrel during the construction of the Sethu Bridge:
• The Act of Service: As referenced by Thondaradipodi Azhwar in his Thiru Maalai verse, the squirrels, unable to carry boulders, rolled in the sand and ran to the bridge to shake off the grains, assisting the colossal effort.
• Rama’s Blessings: Impressed by their sincere devotion, Lord Rama lovingly stroked the squirrels, leaving three permanent vertical lines on their bodies—a divine mark believed to be Rama’s own finger prints.
