- The Name and Divine Counsel
The name Thirumoozhikkulam is derived from Thiru (Holy) + Mozhi (Word/Statement/Counsel) + Kalam (Place/Time), meaning the “Holy Place where the Word was Spoken.”
• The Legend: According to the Sthala Puranam, this is the spot where Lord Rama imparted sacred counsel and divine truths (Dharma Mozhi) to His younger brother, Lakshmana, after the vanavasa (exile) period.
• Symbolism: The temple represents the importance of following one’s Dharma and listening to righteous counsel, a virtue embodied by Lakshmana. - The Form of Lakshmana
While dedicated to Lakshmana, the Moolavar is fundamentally an aspect of Lord Vishnu Himself. Worshipping Lakshmana here is considered equivalent to worshipping the Lord’s dedicated devotion and commitment to duty. This temple is part of the rare “Four Temples” circuit in Kerala, where the deities correspond to the four brothers of the Ramayana:
• Thirumoozhikkulam: Lakshmana
• Thriprayar: Rama
• Irattakulam: Bharata
• Payammal: Shatrughna - Architectural Style and Rituals
• Kerala Style: The temple is constructed in the pristine Kerala style architecture, featuring a circular Sreekovil, traditional murals, and a copper-plated conical roof, creating a tranquil atmosphere.
• Glorified by Azhwars: The temple is praised by the Vaishnava Azhwars in the Divya Prabandham, confirming its ancient lineage and spiritual importance.
Thirumoozhikkulam Divyadesam offers a unique opportunity to worship the Lord in the form of the dedicated Lakshmana, seeking blessings for clarity, righteousness, and commitment in one’s life.
