👑 Sthala Puranam: The Bride’s Divine Choice (Kalyana Avasaram)
The temple’s history revolves around a profound cosmic event and a king’s prayer:
- Brighu Muni’s Curse: Great Rishis sought Brighu Muni to determine the greatest among the Trinity (Brahma, Vishnu, Shiva). After being denied easy access to Shiva and Brahma, Brighu Muni was warmly received by Sriman Narayanan in Vaikuntam. However, when Sri Lakshmi objected to the Muni’s presence, Brighu Muni cursed her to be born on Earth as a human. Narayanan agreed to follow her.
- King Dharma Varman’s Prayer: On Earth, King Dharma Varman of Kumbakonam, who helped rishis defeat demons, was childless. Following the direction of an Asareeri (divine voice), he prayed to Sri Lakshmi, and she was born as his daughter, Vara Lakshmi.
- The Divine Wedding: To find a perfect groom, the King arranged a Swayamvaram. Sri Lakshmi (Vara Lakshmi/Kamalavalli) immediately recognized Sriman Narayanan, who had arrived as a groom, and garlanded Him. The King then consecrated a temple in honor of their divine marriage.
This site is uniquely known for the Lord’s commitment to marry the Goddess, embodying the Kalyana Thirukkolam (Marriage Posture).
