📜 Sthala Puranam: The Initiation of Thirumangai Alvar
Neelan to Thirumangai Mannan
• The Warrior Neelan: The story begins in Thirukurayalur (Thirumangai Alvar’s birthplace), where a blue-skinned warrior named Neelan rose to prominence in the Chola Kingdom. His bravery earned him the title of Aali Nadan (Lord of Thiruvali) and Mangai Mannan (Lord of Mangaimadam).
• Kumudhavalli’s Condition: Neelan fell in love with Kumudhavalli Nachiyar, a woman born from a cursed Apsaras named Sumangali. To marry her, Kumudhavalli set a condition: Neelan must dedicate his life to Sriman Narayanan and perform continuous service to His devotees, including feeding 1008 Vaishnavites daily for a year at Mangaimadam (Veera Narasimhar Sannidhi). Neelan fulfilled this, transforming into a devoted Vaishnavite.
The Mantra Revelation
• The Robbery: To continue his service, Neelan began resorting to robbery to raise funds. Goddess Lakshmi, witnessing his deep but unconventional devotion, requested the Lord to bless him.
• The Divine Couple: The Almighty, along with Goddess Lakshmi, appeared before Neelan disguised as a rich, newly married couple. Neelan robbed them of all their ornaments, but he struggled to remove a small toe ring from the bride.
• The Initiation: Neelan demanded to know the mantra used to prevent the ring’s removal. The Lord, pleased with his fierce determination, called Neelan close and taught him the Thirumandhiram (Om Namo Narayanaya). This moment transformed Neelan from a robber to Thirumangai Alvar, the last of the twelve Alvars.
