📜 Sthala Puranam: The Garden of Parijatham and Unconditional Devotion
The Garden of Parijatham (Thirukavalambadi)
• The Name: The name Kavalambadi means a dense garden full of flowers. The Utsava Murthy holds a Sengol (staff/stick), appropriate for a king or a cowherd.
• Satyabhama’s Wish: After Lord Krishna retrieved the celestial Parijatha flowers from Indra Loka (having defeated the demon Naraka) and gave them to Rukmini, His consort Satyabhama was deeply disappointed.
• The Promise Fulfilled: To fulfill His promise to Satyabhama to give her an entire garden of Parijatham flowers, Lord Krishna, with the help of Lord Shiva, located and appeared at this spot, which was naturally abundant with Parijatham. He came down here, overjoyed, along with both Rukmini and Satyabhama.
Grace for Vishwaksenar and Rudra
• Vishwaksenar’s Wish: Vishwaksenar, the chief of the Nithyasuris and commander of Lord Vishnu’s army, performed penance here seeking the unique darshan of the Lord as Lord Krishna and fulfilled his wish.
• Rudra’s Cleansing: Lord Rudra (Shiva) worshipped here (after his penance in Kadamba Kshetram and Kantiyur) to get rid of the severe Brahma Hathi Dhosam (the sin of having killed Brahma).
• The Moral (Bhagavad Gita principle): Both Vishwaksenar and Rudra sought the Lord not for boons, but simply out of devotion and to discharge their duties (performing penance). The Lord, pleased by their selfless devotion, blessed them both unconditionally, embodying the teaching that performing one’s duties without expectation earns the greatest grace.
The Name Interpretation (Kavalam)
The name Kavalambadi is also interpreted as Kavalam (a small quantity of food). The Lord here happily accepts the pure state of devotion (or pure bhava) of His devotees as the ultimate food offering, hence there is traditionally no Madapalli (temple kitchen) for cooking food for the Lord in this temple.
