Sree Appakkudathaan Perumal Temple or Thirupper Nagar is a Hindu temple located in Koviladi, a village from Tiruchirapalli, Tamil Nadu, India, 10 miles (16 km). It is dedicated to Vishnu and is one of the Divya Desams — the 108 Vishnu temples revered by the 12 poet saints or Alwars at Nalayira Divya Prabandham. It is one of five Kshetrams of Pancharanga situated on the banks of the Cauvery River. The other Kshetrams of Pancha Ranga include Sri Rangam, Thiru Indalur, Sri Rangapatanam, and Kumbakonam. This is one of 108 desams of Divya, and is also called Thirupernagar. The Lord is called Appalarenganathar and Kamalavalli is known as Thayar.
The perumal is in a sleeping posture on the adiseshan and blesses Markendeya Maharishi with the left hand blessing Indra and chandra and the right hand. It is adorned by a Saligrama garland. Bhoomadevi sits at his feet. The appakudam is a little distance from the right hand, which is fairly large. Every evening the Appam Neivedyam is offered from this kudam. There is santhanagopalan on the garbha graha. Since Lord Emperuman gave Appam to Ubamanyu, the lord’s prasadham here is Appam to Him for evening pooja.
Sriman Narayanan ‘s activity which gave the app was seen in nammalwar’s Gnyna Dhirusti who is Thirukkurugoor Biran Sadagopan compared Thirumaliruncholai and Thiruppernagar and sang 11 paasurams in Thiruvaaimozhi. Every day a King used to feed around a lakh people to free himself from a curse and get back his powers. Lord Vishnu once dressed himself up and came for food. He asked the king to give him a pot full of Appam after eating, the whole day, which is a sweet made of rice in South India. He freed the king from the curse once the Lord had it, and thus he came to be known as Appakudathan wherein kudam means pot in tamil.
